This course involves many elements that mimic working life and uses a variety of methodologies appropriate to the communication topic under discussion, from seminars and workshops to lectures and simulations. In the group project, you research business communication in practice.
You will showcase your active learning in practical exercises and experience a taste of working life in the simulations in which you will write a variety of business messages under pressure in a professional environment.
You will improve your presentation skills in workshops and by giving a business presentation which we film and which you then analyse. You will all receive and give feedback enabling everyone to recognise their strengths and weaknesses and develop as the course progresses.
This is a skills based course. Your grade reflects your abilities to apply knowledge and skills in practice: in writing exercises and oral presentations. This is mostly individual work. However, you will need to be a supportive member of your group project and contribute to a positive class atmosphere.
Read the instructions for the various assignments, project and presentation carefully, especially before emailing questions to the lecturer!
You need to achieve a pass grade (50%) for each component of the course: presentation, project and business writing to pass the course.

You will work in groups on an investigative project with a company. This gives you an opportunity to see how what we discuss in class is applied in practice in the real world.
All activities in this course will serve you well in your internship as you will develop practical working life skills.
As there is no exam for this course, there is no resit. If you fail the course by not passing one of the components, not completing a compulsory element or not submitting an assignment, you are responsible for completing/submitting those at a later date as agreed with the lecturer. Points will be deducted for late submission of assignments/completions. Students with late completions without medical certificates will not be able to score top grades.
You cannot improve your course grade by resubmitting work.
You are expected to attend classes and participate actively in all aspects of the course throughout the semester, i.e. in class seminars, workshops, the office simulations and student presentations.

The grading scale employed in the course is the standard Metropolia grading scale:
Grade Percentage/points Explanation
5 90 – 100 Outstanding performance: not only fulfils all standard requirements but demonstrates originality and imagination
4 80 – 89 Excellent performance, fulfilling all tasks in an appropriate manner
3 70 – 79 Strong performance, showing strong understanding of basic concepts and good grasp of techniques, but with certain minor problems still requiring further attention
2 60 – 69 Good performance, demonstrating basic grasp of concepts and techniques but less adept at more advanced application of these
1 50 – 59 Adequate performance, showing just enough understanding of the subject to merit a pass grade but requiring greater effort to achieve a more satisfactory result
0 0 – 49 30 – 49: insufficient to pass but capable of achieving a more satisfactory result if greater effort is made
0 – 29: a result indicating a significant lack of effort on the part of the student, and a clear signal that major improvements are necessary in the organisation of study time

Final exam (50%)
School of Business
Degree Programme in International Business and Logistics, Degree Programme in European Business Administration
Leiritie 1

Strategic analysis of global, regional and local phenomena and contexts
Scenario planning
Risk analysis
All these enable the development of skills required for senior managerial positions.
Final exam takes place in normal scheduled class time, 9 December 2020
Resit exams will be arranged at earliest in January 2021
The greater use of international information sources, the more successful will be the experience of the course.
As this course is worth 5 ECTS, students should expect to work at least 130 hours, including the 45 hours allocated to class time. Reading is a major part of the learning experience, and students should be prepared to spend significant time researching topics of particular interest to them, within the context of the course.
Apart from the scheduled final exam, there are also unscheduled class tests that are designed to encourage maximum attendance and more effective learning. Failure to attend these will not be compensated unless for certified medical reasons.

There are many good guides to research methods, including this:
Mark Saunders, Philip Lewis and Adrian Thornhill (2019) Research Methods for Business Students, 8th ed. Harlow: Pearson. (ISBN 978-1-292-20878-7)
There is a large selection of books that discuss research methods in the library. Almost all of these are suitable as reference books to consult during your research.
An essential reference is Metropolia Business School’s Thesis Guide, which is available in OMA, including from the workspace for this course.
This course comprises a short series of lectures followed by student presentations based on the research topic of their choice. The focus is on learning about research methods by applying them in practice. It is not a course *about* research methods. Instead, it is an opportunity to use them in practice. Ultimately each student must produce a well-developed research plan that is intended to serve as the basis for their Bachelor's Thesis.

Regular attendance is strongly encouraged. This applies particularly to the presentations, which are often the most rewarding and informative parts of the course. Regardless of the topics chosen by other students, we are all able to learn from each other's experiences of problems in research work, and how to overcome these.

For students who wish to combine their thesis with their work experience, this course provides useful guidance about how to manage the sometimes conflicting demands of employers and the academic requirements necessary for a successful thesis.
There are no exams for this course. The assessment work is as listed below.
Activity Number of hours
Lectures 20
Assessment 60
Reading 50
Total 130
Preliminary literature review - a presentation followed by the delivery of a written report one week later, using feedback and criticism gained from the discussion following the presentation. This is worth 25% of the total assessment.
Presentations are scheduled to take in the weeks following the Study Week in October. The first set of presentations will take place on 29 October. Depending on the number of students enrolled to this course, they may continue until the end of November.
The research plan, which is worth 75% of the total assessment, should be delivered by 10 December.
In this way, students who complete the course successfully will receive feedback that will help them continue their thesis work in the following semester, on the assumption that the research plan forms the basis of the thesis.
