Profile of the programme

The Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering combines studies in chemistry and technology; the biotechnology and food engineering studies also include some biology. The knowledge and skills gained during these studies enable the production of commodities that are useful with respect to society and common welfare, such as medical products, cosmetics, paints, fuels, and food. Prospective graduates often work in the development and manufacturing of these products as well as in environmental monitoring.

Good scientific knowledge is a quality of the graduated engineer and is developed during the studies. Two-year studies are the same for all students. During the second year, the professional major is chosen among three alternatives:
• Biotechnology and Food Engineering
• Chemical Engineering

In addition to the professional major, the student chooses a module from some other degree programme or one or two interdisciplinary electivestudies which are connected to her/his personal interests and goals. These studies support multidisciplinarity, and their diversity ensures that the graduated engineer has a strong, applied and environmentally friendly hold of the field.

The studies include a 20-week guided work placement and a Bachelor’s thesis during the final year of study.

Key learning outcomes

The basis of the competence goal is a good knowledge of mathematics and science and the application of this knowledge in the fields of biotechnology and food engineering, chemical engineering and materials engineering.

At the beginning of the studies, the aim is to create an overall perception of the business operations, job opportunities and technical industrial solutions in the above-mentioned fields of technology.

Biotechnical and chemical engineers should have a good knowledge of the following:
• behaviour of substances and materials, for example different states and operating conditions
• foodstuffs and biomaterials as well as raw materials and intermediate products
• design and control of production processes
• laboratory analytics
• environmental, quality, safety, and health aspects of all operations

Each study module concentrates on deepening the students’ knowledge of one or more aspects mentioned above.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Biotechnical and chemical engineers work as experts in the fields of environmental, biotechnical chemical, material engineering.

Graduates are employed by engineering and design offices, importers, authority and research laboratories, research institutes, device manufacturers and suppliers, system suppliers and by various production facilities.

Studies in the Degree Programme of Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering provides the students with knowledge and skills required when working in expert and administrative positions in pharmaceutical, biotechnical, diagnostic, chemical, material, coating and food industries. The studies also enable the student to work in positions connected with sales, quality management, environment and training.

Access to further studies

Access to Master's studies according to the entrance qualifications of the university.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

Each course assessed using grading 0-5. Grade 0 = fail and grades 1-5 = pass. The assessment criteria are presented in each course description and the actual assessment methods depend on the teacher of the course.

Graduation requirements

240 ECTS credits to be completed according to the curriculum.

Mode of study

Full-time studies. Studies include lectures, instructed exercises and laboratory work, learning and project tasks in group or individually, self-study, web based studies and work placement.
