Profile of the programme

The higher vocational diploma of social and health care field titled oral hygienist (UAS) is carried out in oral hygiene degree programme. The extent of studies is 210 credits and length of education is 3,5 years. An oral hygienist is an independent oral health care expert and developer in a multiprofessional team of social and health care field.

Key learning outcomes

Students of the Degree Programme of Oral Hygiene graduates as experts in evidence based oral health care. Competence of clinical caring, ethical competence, work community competence, development competence and international competence are the essential competencies of the oral hygienist.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Core of the oral hygienist’s work is oral health promotion of people of different ages and from different cultures, defining oral health, and prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of oral infectious diseases. He/she can work in primary health care such as in health care center or private dental practices, where he/she can also work in managerial duties. He/she can also work as self-employed or as an entrepreneur. In addition the oral hygienist can work in the commercial companies of the field in sales or product development.

The curriculum meets the degree requirements, the skills and development needs of working life, and the requirements of national and international cooperation. It emphasizes student-centered, learning- and competence-based thinking. The competence objectives tell the student what kind of competence is required of him or her and help him / her to assess his / her own learning. The competence objectives have been defined as co-operation between working life and the University of Applied Sciences, and they describe the student's competence and readiness for various work tasks.
