The Metropolia University of Applied Sciences’ health care and nursing student’s know-how is described according to the NQF, National Qualifications Framework. In addition, the Rectors' Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences’ national competence recommendations are taken into consideration.
Nursing and health care graduates’ know-how includes learning skills, ethical competence, collaboration know-how, innovation know-how and internationalization know-how.
Nursing and health care graduate knows how to evaluate and develop her/his know-how and learning skills. She/he knows how to acquire, handle and evaluate critically health care and nursing field’s information and is able to take responsibility for the group's learning and to share the information learned.
The graduate is able to take responsibility for his/her actions and its consequences. She/he is able to work according to the health care and nursing’s professional ethical considerations and takes different kinds of actors into consideration. She/he knows how to apply the principles of equality and sustainable development. She/he is able to influence the society by utilizing her/his skills based on ethical values.
The graduate knows how to act as a qualified member of the working community and is able to promote well-being. In addition, she/he is able to work in communicational and interactional situations and is able to create personal contacts with working life and to work in networks. She/he has the ability to make decisions in unforeseen situations and is able to manage work and to work independently as an expert in the field of health care and nursing. She/he also understands the basic principles of entrepreneurship.
The graduate is able to solve problems in a creative way and is able to develop work methods. She/he knows how to work in the health care and nursing projects and knows how to seek customer-oriented, sustainable and economically profitable solutions.
The graduate has the required language skills and is capable of multicultural cooperation. In addition, she/he is able to take into consideration the international development and its possibilities.
Students from the Metropolia University of Applies Sciences become biomedical laboratory scientists, paramedics, midwives, radiographers, nurses (a program both in Finnish and in English), dental hygienists and public health nurses.
Development
The Advisory Board has discussed the core curriculum on two occasions (25.1.2011 and 15.2.2012). The Degree Programs in Nursing arranged a forum for representatives of the working life and of the students on November 22, 2010; here, both parties voiced their perceptions of the future need for competences, which were discussed. A representative from the working life was appointed to each team developing the learning outcomes and content of the modules. Learning outcomes and length of the clinical practice periods were discussed with representatives from HUS operative department (perioperative placements), as well as with representatives from Koskela hospital, Oulunkylä rehabilitation hospital, Espoo hospital and Kustaankartano hospital (primary health care).
