Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences students may apply for identification and accreditation of prior learning as part of their compulsory or optional studies, provided they have prior learning corresponding to the curriculum before the course in question begins.

Profile of the programme

Degree programme gives potential (1) to develop digital and graphical media concepts, (2) to manage production processes, (3) to work as a specialist and customer service provider as well as to work as an (4) independent entrepreneur of the field.

Key learning outcomes

Media engineering core skills are:
• skills in technologies and processes of media, information and publishing systems
• business skills in digital and graphical media
• individual specialization and competence to integrate media skills in wide
• skills in visual communication and content production

In addition to professional learning aims general working life competences are emphasized. That is to develop qualifications to work as a leader or manager, to get general adaptation to working life, to have personal communication skills, life-long-learning and provision of state-of-the-art knowledge.
Such core competences are:
- potential in theory of mathematics and natural science
- potential in acquisition of knowledge, monitoring new information and use it in application
- communication skills and interactivity
- product development and project working skills
- entrepreneur, business and leadership
- internationalization

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Media Engineering professionals will work with products and services for information, education, news, entertainment, marketing and advertising. Typically, they have a career in media companies, software houses, electronic documentation and publishing companies, interactive TV and video producers, telecommunication service providers, open and distance learning institutions. Increasing use of communications in all types of industry, and in service, health care, education and household sectors will open further employment opportunities.

The jobs cover a wide range of positions in product design and development, product support, consulting, and marketing. The studies will also encourage entrepreneurship.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences course assessment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. At the beginning of the course, students must be informed on the assessment principles which must be based on the course objectives. Assessment takes primarily place for each course and applies to the students who have registered and been accepted on the course. If necessary, different components of a course may be assessed individually. If the course consists of several components, the teacher may point this out in the assessment principles contained in the implementation plan.

The assessment scale is as follows: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), very satisfactory (2), satisfactory (1), fail (0) and pass (P). Any deviations of this scale will be decided by the President.

240 ECTS credits to be completed according to the curriculum.
