Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

Students have the right to apply for the recognition of prior learning. The recognition is based on the skills of the student regardless of the ways the fore mentioned expertise has been acquired. The student has the responsibility to demonstrate the skills required in the study objectives and to provide the required information and documentation based on which the decision for approval will be made.

Profile of the programme

The Media Communication Bachelor's Degree trains visual communication and digital media experts. The students will develop good basic skills in their specialisation field. The students will learn to integrate theory and practice in different fields of media. They will become equipped to engage in development work by participating in projects and learning by means of a problem-oriented approach. The students will become familiar with the media business and have the ability to work as entrepreneurs.
The Media Communication Bachelor's Degreee has four lines: 3D Animation and Visualisation, Visual Communications, Digital Media and XR Design. The specialised studies of these four lines provide the students with an opportunity to learn about content production for different needs and media.
The language of instruction is Finnish, but some courses will be taught in English in the spring term for the benefit of exchange students.

Key learning outcomes

The objective is that the students will be able to become independent experts in their field with good cooperation skills. Another objective is that the students achieve eligibility to continue their studies and readiness to maintain and deepen their professionalism in a variety of working and learning environments.
Students learn about the history and development of their field. They will also learn the expression, form, and presentation and narrative methods of their field, and the relevant production processes, work methods and professional techniques. The studies partly take the form of projects which teach the students cooperation skills and project management. At the end of their studies, students can develop new types of content and media concepts and market themselves.
Digital media studies approach the design and production of interactive online services from a variety of perspectives. Online technologies, information architecture, social media concepts and services and interactive functions are key elements of the training.
3D Animation and Visualisation looks into three-dimensional visualisation, camera and character animation and the modelling of various virtual environments. Students will become fluent in 3D content design, production and product development.
Visual Communications students can specialise in Graphic Design or Motion Graphics. Professional studies give students a solid foundation into graphic design, after which they complete specialisation studies in the field they have chosen.
As a XR Design media student you will learn to create innovative objects, environments and concepts for the virtual world, 3D models and animations for game engines, image editing, motion graphics, and 360 video. You also learn how to program game engines and make applications for AR, VR and mobile devices.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Graduates of Media Communication Bachelor's Degree can obtain various occupational profiles depenging on their specialization option.
Upon graduation on digital media, the students can find employment in various digital environment expert positions relating, among other things, to online service design, production or project management. The actual work may have to do with the technical solutions of online services, development of social media services, planning of interactive functions or digital media concept and structural planning, for example in a design or communication agency, in companies’ communications departments, in IT companies or the advertising business.
Graduates of 3D animation have found work, for example, as news graphics designers on television, 2D or 3D games graphics designers, makers of architectural visualisations, character animators, compositors and 3D advertising graphic designers. The job may be found in the gaming or entertainment industry, TV and film production, design agencies, advertising industry, study material production or science visualisation and research.
Visual communication graduates can find employment in e.g. advertising, marketing communication, publishing industry, corporate image and brand building, visual user interface design, interactive multimedia or packaging design.
XR technology is an evolving industry with new job opportunities. After graduation the job may range from design visualization, 3D games or simulators, virtual set design, health technology to science visualization.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences course assessment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. At the beginning of the course, students must be informed on the assessment principles which must be based on the course objectives. Assessment takes primarily place for each course and applies to the students who have registered and been accepted on the course. If necessary, different components of a course may be assessed individually. If the course consists of several components, the teacher may point this out in the assessment principles contained in the implementation plan.
The assessment scale is as follows: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), very satisfactory (2), satisfactory (1), fail (0) and pass (P). Any deviations of this scale will be decided by the President.

Graduation requirements

A student is eligible to graduate when he/she has completed all the required courses set for the degree as a present student (extent 240 ECTS credits.

Mode of study

Studies are implemented as courses, course modules or projects.Studies include contact teaching and self-study. Studies aiming towards a degree are implemented as full-time studies

Workplacement(s) and Work-based Learning

Studies include a 30 ECTS work placement. Work placement is usually carried out during the spring term of third study year or autumn term of fourth study year or during summer. It can be completed in one or two work placement periods.

Obligatory or Optional Mobility

Student exchange abroad is recommended during the third study year (autumn or spring term).
