Objective

Students understand the significance of microbiological knowledge to their work and have competence to prevent transmission of infections. They have competence to apply their aseptic knowledge based on microbiology to various situations in the workplace. Students perceive clinical laboratory tests as part of health care and familiarise themselves with central sample and patient examinations as well as factors related to the reliability of laboratory examinations.

Content

Normal bacterial flora and its significance to sampling, normal flora of skin and mucous membrane, routes of transmission and infectious diseases in nurses’ work, prevention of transmission of infections, pathogenesis of infectious diseases, basics of microbiological sampling: bacterial, virus, fungal and parasite samples, clinical laboratory examinations as part of health care, laboratory analysis process and its quality assurance: preanalysis, analysis and postanalysis, major laboratory examinations of clinical physiology, haematology and chemistry and their significance

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students understand the significance of clinical microbiological knowledge to nursing and the prevention of transmission of infections as well as can apply their aseptic knowledge based on microbiology to various situations in the workplace.
Students perceive clinical laboratory examinations as part of health care.
Students are familiar with the most common sampling and patient examinations as well as factors affecting the reliability of laboratory examinations.
Students are familiar with the point-of-care testing (POC) and understand its significance to patient care.

Students can use the clinical microbiological knowledge to nursing and the prevention of transmission of infections as well as apply and justify their aseptic knowledge based on microbiology to various situations in the workplace.
Students perceive clinical laboratory examinations as part of health care.
Students use the most common sampling and patient examinations as well as understand the factors affecting the reliability of laboratory examinations.
Students use the point-of-care testing (POC) and understand its significance to patient care.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students can analyse the significance of clinical microbiological knowledge to nursing and the prevention of transmission of infections as well as combine their aseptic knowledge based on clinical microbiology in various situations in the workplace.
Students perceive clinical laboratory examinations as part of health care.
Students can use the most common sampling and patient examinations and evaluate the factors affecting their reliability.
Students can use and analyse the point-of-care testing (POC) as well as understand its significance to patient care.
