Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences students may apply for identification and accreditation of prior learning as part of their compulsory or optional studies, provided they have prior learning corresponding to the curriculum before the course in question begins.

Profile of the programme

Master’s Programme in Business Informatics is a degree program of 90 ETCs for business professionals who want to deepen their strategic and managerial expertise via improved management skills and better use of business information systems.

The degree aims to prepare student to address the challenges of digitalization and digital transformation in business and working life. Thus, the Programme has a strong emphasis on improving general management skills for managers of technology-driven companies for the digital age.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Master's Degree in Business Informatics qualifies for expert, team and project leadership positions, and advancement towards management positions in the private or public sector.

Key learning outcomes

The student will become a competent analyzer and user of business information for decision-making, business operations, and business development. Importantly, the engineering student will also get familiar with key business concepts, different business models, and learn how to collect, interpret and analyze data to craft the answers to business critical questions. Business and engineering students study together in the same group and thus benefit each other via networking and exchange of ideas.

Graduation requirements

All studies indicated in the curriculum of the Master’s Degree Programme in Business Informatics must be successfully completed.

In the Programme, each student also plans and implements a development project in/for real business life, typically for their work organization. In doing so, the student improves his research, project and change management skills. This R&D project will be reported as a Master’s Thesis (30 ECTS).

The network of international partner universities offers opportunities for short term and semester exchange. The Master’s Summer School is a form of internationalization where visiting professors offer new insights. Collaboration across Master’s student groups in various disciplines adds to international understanding

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences course assessment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. Students must be informed at the beginning of the course on the assessment principles, which must be based on the course objectives. Assessment takes primarily place for each course and applies to the students who have registered and been accepted on the course. If necessary, different components of a course may be assessed individually. If the course consists of several components, the teacher may point this out in the assessment principles contained in the implementation plan.
The assessment scale is as follows: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), very satisfactory (2), satisfactory (1), fail (0) and pass (P). Any deviations of this scale will be decided by the President.

Mode of study

When studying on a part-time basis, the student can achieve the Master’s degree in 2 years, however with flexibility both ways. Contact sessions take place every 2nd Fridays, 9-16.00 i.e. approximately twice a month, and occasionally on Wednesday evenings, approximately 3-4 times a year. Some forms of e-learning will also be applied. The language of instruction is English.
