Descriptions

The Degree Programme in Music includes two bachelor's degrees: Music Educator and Musician. In the Music Educator's Degree there are two professional majors: Instrument and Vocal Teaching, and Early Childhood Music Education and Community Music. In the Musician's Degree there are two professional majors as well: Performance, and Music Writing and Production.

Instrument and vocal instructors get qualifications to work as teachers in diverse pedagogical tasks in the field of music, such as private and group tuition in an instrument, leading bands, and teaching music theory. Early childhood music educators get extensive qualifications for elementary music teaching of all stages of the life span. Community music skills are in the core of the education. Studies in music education generate vocational teacher qualification.

Instrumentalists and vocalists majoring in performance work as performers in diverse professions in the rhythmic music field, such as orchestral, band, and studio musicians. Music writers and producers master composing, arranging, song-writing, and music technology. They work e.g. in music and multimedia content production, sound design, and music producions.

Because the Music Educator's degree contains 60 pts. ECTS of studies that generate vocational teacher qualification, there is no room in the curricula for a 15 or 30 pt. ECTS study module in a minor subject.

Due to the individual nature of course accomplishments in the field of arts education, all courses in the Degree Programme in Music are assessed pass/fail (excluding Bachelor's Thesis).

Objective

Upon graduating as Music Educator the student is proficient in various musical and pedagogical work practices, and is an expert in pedagogical interaction. The student understands the broad potential of music education and can justify this to the learner, to communities and to the society. The student gains competence in reflecting on their own activities, team work, and professional interaction within work communities.

Music Educators possess strong skills in musicianship and pedagogy, which are built from the artistic and technical mastery of their own instrument, as well as diverse pedagogical knowledge. Depending on the major subject, they utilize the potential in applied arts and are able to support learning through various different approaches.

Graduating Musicians master a wide range of different genres and their required expression within the field of popular music and jazz. Depending on the major subject, the focus is on either advanced instrumental and ensemble skills or on the creation, production and technology of music. The studies support the student’s professional growth through diverse courses that develop musical observation and working life skills.

Students graduating from the Degree Programme in Music can search for and peruse information critically, analyse and reflect on their own work and that of others, and express themselves both verbally and in writing. They can produce and interpret musical notation as well as other graphic and written expressions of music. The students understand the developmental trends in music and can put their own activities into a historical perspective. They can utilize an entrepreneurial attitude in the job sector, and understand the workings of the music industry, copyright law and practices, and the contract and reporting procedures.

Description

Learning Outcomes Upon graduation, the student can work as a music pedagogue who enables experiential and holistic music learning. The student can utilize versatile teaching methods, music education practices, arts integration, creative activities and their own pedagogical sensibilities when supporting the first steps and joy of music learning for different individuals, ages and groups. Supporting creativity, expression, improvisation and musical inventiveness guide the pedagogical activities. As a music pedagogue and a musician, the student can build community spirit and create learning environments where every learner can feel valuable. The student can utilize their artistic and pedagogical skills to support early childhood education, basics of instrument teaching and the teaching of different groups and learners, and by creating inclusive music events and performances. They can engage in multidisciplinary interaction within community arts environments beyond the traditional field of music education, developing new practices and enabling experiences through audience work and community outreach with orchestras, theatres and museums, and in creative activities in the social and health services (e.g. social work with the elderly), or through the development of well-being at the workplace. The student can direct and encourage themselves in the professional development that takes place in interactive situations. They know how to act constructively in different networks to develop their own field and express themselves. They can utilize an entrepreneurial attitude and digital tools in developing their own work.
