The education strengthens expertise in rehabilitation development, encompassing future-oriented foresight, solution-focused and innovative co-creation, as well as systemic impact.
It deepens professional knowledge in research-based development and visionary leadership in rehabilitation. At the core of the degree programme is the promotion of rehabilitation processes through collaboration between clients and professionals, the creation of innovative networks, and influencing the future of rehabilitation through sustainable solutions. The knowledge, practices, and competencies developed during the studies can be applied across career paths, within workplaces, and in broader societal engagement.
Students become part of a multidisciplinary learning community of experts that advances evidence-based and high-quality rehabilitation through research and development partnerships. The degree programme aims to inspire continuous learning and broaden perspectives as future developers.
Key learning outcomes
The general goal of studies leading to an upper university of applied sciences degree is to give the student the following competencies:
• broad and in-depth knowledge of the relevant field required for the development of working life, as well as the necessary theoretical knowledge for working in demanding expert and management positions in the relevant field;
• an in-depth picture of the relevant field, position in working life and social significance, as well as readiness to follow and analyze the development of research information and professional practice in the relevant field;
• readiness for lifelong learning and continuous development of one's professional skills;
• good communication and language skills required in working life; mixed
• skills required for international interaction and professional activities.
Occupational profiles of graduates with examples
Graduates of the degree programme are leading experts in rehabilitation development, working especially as project managers and specialists in research-based development projects and activities. They also take on leadership roles in the field of rehabilitation development across diverse and evolving environments, particularly as team leaders and supervisors.
Access to further studies
The degree programme is comparable to equivalent European qualifications (Master in Rehabilitation). Graduates are eligible to apply for further university studies leading to a Licentiate or Doctoral degree. The qualification also provides eligibility to apply for vocational teacher education programmes.
Examination regulations, assessment and grading
According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences course assessment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. Students must be informed at the beginning of the course on the assessment principles, which must be based on the course objectives. Assessment takes primarily place for each course and applies to the students who have registered and been accepted on the course. If necessary, different components of a course may be assessed individually. If the course consists of several components, the teacher may point this out in the assessment principles contained in the implementation plan.
The assessment scale is as follows: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), very satisfactory (2), satisfactory (1), fail (0) and pass (P). Any deviations of this scale will be decided by the President.

A student is required to successfully complete the designated program of courses.
Mode of study
The degree programme is delivered online. At the beginning and end of the studies, there are two contact learning days held at Metropolia’s Myllypuro campus.

Master’s Degree from a University of Applied Sciences (equivalent to EQF Level 7)
Workplacement(s) and Work-based Learning
Practical training is not included in the Master’s degree programme. Collaboration with the working life is supported by the master thesis and other learning exercise/assignment.
Obligatory or Optional Mobility
The degree programme strengthens the student's ability to work as a specialist in multidisciplinary national and international teams and networks. Some lessons may be delivered in English, and materials in english may be used during the studies. Project collaboration may offer opportunities to complete parts of the studies in ways that support internationalisation. Students also have the option to choose studies in english from Metropolia’s general Master's level course offerings or from other universities' open study programmes.
