The studies are implemented with diverse co-operation with working life. Studies include a 30 ECTS work placement which can also be divided in two 15 ECTS work placements. Additionally student complete project studies which are held during different stages of studies.

Access to further studies

The students who have graduated from the Degree Program in XR Design can apply for further studies in the field of design. These include Master's studies or specialisation studies in universities of applied sciences or Master's studies at a research university, according to the eligibility criteria of each higher education institution.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

According to the Degree Regulations of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences students may apply for identification and accreditation of prior learning as part of their compulsory or optional studies, provided they have prior learning corresponding to the curriculum before the course in question begins.
The students’ prior learning can be recognised in their degree based on certificates or demonstration of skills. In the Degree Programme in Design the transfer of prior learning is always considered on a case-to-case basis.

Degree Programme in XR Design is a leading educator in the field of XR design. The programme strives for finding innovative solutions to current and future needs and promotes wide use of design in the metropolitan area.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

XR sector is an emerging field of the future with new job opportunities. You can find employment for example in areas such as design visualization in architecture, engineering and construction, the design industry, 3D games and 3D simulators, virtual platforms for film and television, XR applications in health technologies or scientific visualization.

A job can be found in the games or entertainment industry, TV and film production, design agencies, marketing and advertising, production of educational material, or science illustration.

Key learning outcomes

You will learn to create innovative applications and content for virtual and augmented reality environments. You will design spaces, concepts, objects, interfaces and immersive experiences for virtual environments using 3D-modelling software and game engines as your tools.

Graduation requirements

To be able to graduate the student has to pass her/his studies according to the curriculum and the general qualification requirements.

Students have opportunities to participate student exchange and international work placement during 3rd and 4th years of the studies.

Specific admission requirements

An applicant must have an acceptable proof of English language skills.

Student selection requires that the applicant has one of the following acceptable proof of English language skills:

1. Language test results:

3. Higher education degree completed in English in an EU/EEA country, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, or the United States

5. One of the following grade cases in Finnish Matriculation Examination, European Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate or Reifeprüfung/DIA:

The Finnish Matriculation Examination: English on advanced Level with a minimum grade of M
The International Baccalaureate completed in English International Baccalaureate diploma: grade 4 in higher level English (https://www.ibo.org/)

The Reifeprüfung/DIA completed diploma:  at least grade 7 in advanced English

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

According to the Degree Regulations of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences course assessment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. At the beginning of the course students must be informed on the assessment principles which must be based on the course objectives. Assessment takes primarily place for each course and applies to the students who have registered and been accepted on the course. If necessary, different components of a course may be assessed individually. If the course consists of several components, the teacher may point this out in the assessment principles contained in the implementation plan.
The assessment scale is as follows: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), very satisfactory (2), satisfactory (1), fail (0) and pass (P). Any deviations of this scale will be decided by the President.

Mode of study

The studies in the Degree Program in XR Design are offered mainly as daytime studies.
