Objective

The aim of the course is to provide students with an understanding of the world of microbes and their role in different environments and processes. Students will acquire a basic knowledge of viruses, bacteria, yeasts and moulds and internalise the concepts of eukaryotes and prokaryotes.

The course introduces the ubiquity of microbes; students will understand the presence of microbes in air, water, environment, surfaces, food and various industrial processes.

By the end of the course, students will know how microbes can be used in different processes and how to identify the problems they can cause. Students will gain knowledge on how to control and prevent microbial growth and how to study microbes. The student will have an understanding of the importance of personal hygiene at different stages of the process, for example during sampling.

Content

Microbial classification, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structures. Genetic material of the cell and the expression of genetic information. The presence and role of microbes in the environment and in different processes. Microbial growth and growth control. Working aseptically and studying microbes in the laboratory.
