Learning outcomes
Students are able to describe the physiological changes taking place during childbirth. They understand the mechanism of labour and can describe the descent of foetus in the birth canal. Students can describe the different phases of labour and its normal process. They understand parturients’ behaviour throughout the childbirth. Students have basic clinical skills required in the follow-up of the mother and foetus during childbirth. The same applies to the skills related to the progress of labour in different phases and the examination of care culture of childbirth from the perspective of evidence-based nursing.

The student doesn´t have to attend the first aid reviewing classes if she/he has revised her/his first aid skills during the last three years.

The course includes 0,5 credits from the review of first aid skills ( 8 hours as practical learning and 5 hours as supervised independent studying).

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Students are able to describe the anatomy of the birth canal, the mechanism of labour, the different phases of labour and their characteristics as well as how the phases of labour manifest themselves in the behaviour, vocal utterances, facial expressions and gestures of the parturient.
Students are able to describe the clinical skills required in managing labour and the basis for their use.
Students describe features of good interaction during labour and forms of support and their significance to the parturient.
Students are able to describe the procedures common in the Finnish labour culture. They can name the benefits and possible disadvantages of these procedures. Students have a clear vision and are able to express it regarding the roles of the parturient and the midwife during childbirth.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Students are able to describe the phases of normal childbirth and analyse factors affecting it. Students can explain the clinical nursing skills midwives need throughout the phases of labour. Students are able to evaluate the effectiveness of clinical nursing skills based on evidence. Students can analyse the effects of support and interaction on the childbirth in a versatile manner. Students are able to analyse how the prevalent labour culture affects the childbirth and the actions of midwives.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Students understand the process of childbirth comprehensively. Students can draw conclusions on factors affecting the childbirth, their mutual relationships and dependence. Students are able to apply their knowledge to changing client situations. Students can evaluate the significance of clinical skills used in managing childbirth based on evidence in a versatile manner. Students deliberate the challenges of support and interaction during childbirth in a versatile manner; they make suggestions for development and come up with possibilities for new applications in individual and changing situations. Students can and are interested in evaluating the strengths and development targets of the prevalent labour culture critically. Students’ arguments are based on evidence. Students contemplate and make suggestions for development on how midwives can promote labour culture focusing on the parturient in a versatile manner.
