Objective
Students are able to take into account the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the participants of a communication situation. Students are able to communicate the information that they have acquired both verbally and in writing. Students know how to use communication methods used by special needs groups and possess the oral and written skills in the second national language (Swedish) required for work assignments within their own field, as laid down in legislation governing the universities of applied sciences.
Content
• Key vocabulary of the second national language in terms of the Occupational Therapist’s work
• Verbal and written communication in the second national language
• Communication of special needs groups
• Signing key words, use of pictures and plain language
Location and time
Swedish: if possible at Myllypuro campus, teaching on Fridays 29.10 - 26.11.21. at 9 - 12 a.m.
Materials
Swedish: teachers own, will be available in the working space before course start
Teaching methods
Swedish: interactive exercises, group work, short lectures
Exam schedules
Swedish: a spoken language level evaluation and a written exam the last lessons, possible to retake written exam twice.
Student workload
Swedish:attendence at lessons 80%, independent work, written tasks outside lesson time

Swedish: spoken language and written language evaluation separately, evaluation on a scale 1 to 5, teaching language Swedish, if necessary also Finnish, material available before course start in e-format in the course work space

The student is able to:

- argue his choices on the basis of professional ethics

Failed
- The student does not know or appreciate knowledge in the field sufficiently
- The student does not know or cannot use concepts in his field properly
- The student's professional level is insufficient
- The student is not acting in accordance with his training and guidance
- The student is not trying to develop himself or his actions
- The student is unconcerned about professional safety or ethical principles
- The student is not motivated by or participating in group or development work

Swedish: continuous evaluation, level assessment of the spoken language, written exam

The course includes Swedish (3 ECTS) and communication of special needs groups (2 ECTS)
The course includes at least 3 credits of to allow students to achieve the oral and written skills in the second national language required for work assignments within their own field, as laid down in the Polytechnics Act (352/2003, section 8). These communication skills should be at least equivalent to skills level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
