Objective

The student knows the control and monitoring mechanisms of construction in different phases of the construction project. The student can analyze the built environment. The student can take into account both internal and external stresses on the structures due to weather conditions and operations.

Content

Principles and methods of land use and construction control
Construction project documents and drawing markings
Construction project progress and parties
The most typical building types and main building parts
Heat, water, fire and sound insulation
Drainage of water from the building envelope, roof and surrounding environment

Location and time

From May 1 to December 10, 2025, the course will be completed independently online on the Moodle platform.

Materials

Review the provided PDF material (Moodle) independently, complete the discussion tasks, and finally take the graded true/false assessment.
Metropolia students can access the "Rakennustieto" website (which contains construction-related information) via the following path: Student’s OMA workspace -> Tools -> Library, languages, terms -> E-resources A-Z -> Click on "R," then select "Rakennustieto: RT-tietoväylä." If you are not a Metropolia student, you can use other sources, such as libraries, online resources, etc.

Teaching methods

From May 1 to December 10, 2025, the course will be completed independently online on the Moodle platform.

Target Group
For everyone interested in the field of construction; no prior knowledge is required.

Course Workload and Recommended Study Time
One credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of student work, meaning that three credits equal approximately 81 hours of student work. Prior knowledge affects the required study time—students with a strong foundation may need less time, while those new to the subject may require more.

Instructions for Completing the Course

To complete this course, the student must successfully complete nine discussion tasks (graded pass/fail), comment on one other student’s response for each discussion task with approximately 20 words, and successfully complete the final graded true/false assessment (graded 0-5). All tasks must be completed successfully to progress in the course.

Discussion Tasks (Pass/Fail)
There are nine discussion tasks in total, and each must be successfully completed. Each discussion task requires commenting on another student’s response with approximately 20 words, meaning a total of nine comments throughout the course.

The discussion tasks contain predefined questions and/or assignments that must be answered. Once a student has submitted their response to the discussion area, they will be able to see other students’ responses and comment on them. There is a response delay of approximately one hour before other students’ responses become visible. The discussion tasks are designed to help students answer the final assessment questions.

Discussion tasks are not graded numerically and do not affect the final grade, but they must be completed successfully in order to take the graded assessment.

Final Assessment (0-5)
The assessment consists of 24 true/false questions. Each correct answer earns one point, for a total of 24 points. The questions vary for each student, as the system randomly assigns different questions.

Students may use course materials during the assessment, but the task must be completed individually. The assessment can be attempted a maximum of three times, so it should be completed carefully. Incorrect answers do not result in negative points. A minimum of 12 points is required to receive a grade of 1. To achieve a grade of 5, a student must earn at least 22 points.

The assessment is graded numerically and determines the final grade for this 3-credit course.

The final assessment can be taken only after all discussion tasks have been successfully completed. The deadline for the final assessment is December 10, 2025, at 11:59 PM.

Student records are reviewed and updated approximately once per month. If a student has not received a completion record after a long period, they should contact anne.aalto@metropolia.fi. During the summer break (June 17 - August 24, 2025), records will not be processed.
