Objective

The student
• identifies the main trends in Western art history and the development of visual communication design
• is able to search for information about art and visual culture
• is able to critically examine and analyse their learning
• is able to perceive the impact of social and cultural events on art and visual communication design
• understands the influence of art history on design and media culture in their own time
• understands the importance of cultural diversity in art history
• is able to use historical references and visual styles in their own work and design solutions.

Content

• History and evolution of visual communication design
• Main trends in European art
• Relationship between visual communication design and art and social developments and the general history of ideas and culture

Materials

Participation in the course does not require the student to purchase separate literature materials. The student can for example use the materials of the Metropolia library available through the finna.metropolia.fi portal. Materials to be studied will be announced during the implementation. Students must also independently search for source material related to the topics of individual assignments.

The implementation will include one teaching day in English with a visiting international guest lecturer.

Student workload

5 credits = 135 h of work. In addition to the teacher-led meetings, students are also allocated a calendar for independent individual and small group work. These reservations can be seen in the implementation data. The implementation will use both collaborative learning and inquiry-based learning. The implementation is also partly based on a flipped teaching model.
