Objective
After completing the course, the student is able to identify photomechanical and digital prints and understand their production methods. The student is familiar with the history and techniques of color photography and materials. The student deepens his/her skills in documenting and identifying photographic materials. The student knows Finnish photographers and is familiar with photographic materials and their use in archives, museums and the context of art.
Content
Photomechanical prints, digital prints, color photography: techniques and materials.
Documentation and identification of photographs.
Photographic art and photo collections.
Location and time
Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, in the premises of the Degree Programme in Conservation.
Materials
Bibliography and lecture materials provided by the lecturer before and during the course.
Teaching methods
Lectures, contact teaching, problem based learning, guided assignments and independent assignments, independent work with literature, excursions, exam.
Tuition is in Finnish.

Student workload
The student's weekly working hours are 40 hours / 1,5 credits. Which has approx. 15 - 20 hours of contact studies with a lecturer. The remaining hours are spent on a literature study or praxis work. 1 credit (cr) is equivalent to 27 hours.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student identifies photomechanical and digital prints. The student knows the history and techniques of color photography. The student is able to identify the types of photographs and techniques of prints under supervision. The student recognizes the materials but his/her understanding of photography, its history and technical development is incoherent.

The student recognizes photomechanical and digital prints and is able to date them quite independently. The student will understand the techniques and development of color photography. The student is able to identify the types of photographs and the technique of prints/proofs. The student recognizes materials and has a complete understanding of their use and development. The student is able to use source materials independently and critically. The student understands the importance of documentation and is able to do it very well..
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student is able to use source materials independently and critically. The student is able to convincingly identify photographs, photomechanical prints and digital prints and is able to give right dating estimations. The student is able to utilize the tools of identification and research. The student understands the techniques and dating of color photography and has an overall understanding of the development of photography. The student understands the importance of documentation and is able to produce it independently and excellently.

Assessment methods and criteria
Learning assignment 80 %, continuous assessment 20 %.
Assessment is based on the continuous evaluation of a student, including attendance and participation of excursions, practical exercises, and their corresponding assessments. Minimum 80 % presence of contact studies must fufill.
