Objective
The student knows the basics of polymeric chemistry. The student is able to classify natural and synthetic materials into chemical groups and understands the effect of a chemical construction on the characteristics of a material. Student knows the factors that influence on the aging of materials and what kind of affect they have on materials chemical structure. The student is able to identify natural and synthetic materials by using basic chemical analyzes and test the artificial aging of materials.
Content
Theory of natural and synthetic materials. Laboratory assignments. Construction of natural and polymeric materials and different factors related to strength, solubility and aging of these materials. In terms of sustainable development, the recycling of materials and the use of natural resources are discussed.
Location and time
Course is held at Arabia campus, Hämeentie 135 D
Materials
Velson Horie - Materials for conservation, organic consolidants, adhesives and coatings
Literature list and study hand out given by the lecturer.
(Science for conservators Book 3 - Adhesives and coatings)
Teaching methods
Tuition mostly in Finnish, lecture, contact teaching, guided assignments, laboratory works, independent work with literature.
Exam schedules
Opintojakson tentti järjestetään kurssin lähipäivänä. Tentti on mahdollista uusia kerran erikseen järjestettävänä uusintatenttipäivänä.
Completion alternatives
No options
Student workload
The weekly working hours of a student is 1,5 cr which is equivalent to 40 hours of studies. 40 hours is formed from approx. 17 hours of contact studies with a lecturer. The remaining hours is spent by independent literature survey or practical work. 1 credit (cr) is equivalent to 27 hours (h).
Content scheduling
Kurssin aikataulu ja jaksotus julkaistaan omassa ennen kurssin alkua.
Evaluation scale
0-5

Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student is able to understand the basic concepts and theory related to the course. The student masters the basic skills and knows at a basic level the chemical constructions and ageing of materials used in conservation. The student is able to acquire information independently.
Assessment methods and criteria
Learning assignment, continuous assessment, final exam.
Assessment is based on continuous assessment of a student, attendance, practical laboratory work and its assessment. Each student is assessed from the starting point of her/his abilities, and how she/he will develop her/his abilities during the course. All given assignments mus be done according to given instructions. Self assessment and peer review.
MInimum 80 % presence of contact studies must fulfill.
