Objective

The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the role of functional anatomy and palpation as a part of clinical reasoning.

The student interacts with the client professionally, respectfully and empathically using a work approach that promotes health. The student can describe the functioning of the joints using osteokinematics and arthrokinematics. The student observes and analyses the functioning of movement chains formed by the joints as a prerequisite for osteopathic examination and manual treatment.

The student can name and describe the structures and functioning of the spine and thorax regionally and segmentarily. The student can describe and observe the active movements of the spine and palpate the normal passive movement of the spine. The student can manually evaluate the functioning of the joints in the spine, using knowledge in osteopathic treatments. The student can explain the development of the back and the impacts of the most common pathological changes and abnormalities on movements.

The student can classify the symptoms and changes related to an acute or a chronic functional abnormality. The student combines anamnesis, observation, active and passive examination and findings reached through palpation.

The student knows the most common repetitive strain injuries in sports. The student recognises their risk factors and injury mechanisms.
