Person-Centered Approach and the Significance of Touch in Osteopathic Care (5 cr)

Objective

Person-centred approach
The student interacts with the client professionally, respectfully and empathically using a work approach that promotes health. The student understands the person-centred work approach. The student observes the vertical position of the human body, practices dialogue-based and health-oriented communication and documents their observations in a person-centred way. The student understands the significance of touch and its ethical dimensions in osteopathic practice. The student takes others into consideration and promotes equality and non-discrimination. The student takes the criteria of diversity and accessibility into account in their actions.

Introduction to practical training
The student understands the osteopathic clinical process as a whole from the student’s and the client’s point of view. The student observes the work of student colleagues with clients in small groups. The student demonstrates an ability to work as part of a team in a clinical environment.

History and development of osteopathy in Finland and across the world
The student can describe the philosophical basis of osteopathy and the principles of osteopathy. The student can describe the key development stages of osteopathy, from the past to the present. The student can define the osteopath’s national and international job description and explain the core osteopathic concepts. The student studies researched knowledge in the field and the nomenclature of osteopathy.

The student is able to describe the key content, concepts, core competence areas and historical frame of reference of osteopathy. They can describe how osteopathy services are organised, recognise the elements of high-quality osteopathy and commit to developing them. The student is able to describe the national and international networks of their field and to make use of them in their study and work.

The student is able to search for, evaluate and provide critical grounds for research-based information and professional practices in the field of osteopathy, and understands the significance of evidence-based information. The student thinks critically and reflects on their own activities as a future osteopath. The student is able to describe the ethical practices of good research and development work.

The student self-assesses and develops their competence and learning methods. The student is able to acquire, critically evaluate and appropriately apply the national and international knowledge base of their field. The student takes responsibility for collaborative learning and sharing knowledge in teams.

Content

- Interacting with and observing the client, observing the client’s vertical position, health-oriented encounters and interaction
- The significance of touch, ethical principles in practice, consent and respectful interaction
- Introduction to practical training and the activities at HyMy Village, observing the work of a senior osteopathy student, introductory visit as a client
- Confidentiality obligation, ethical principles, collegiality, rules of conduct and hygiene
- Development of osteopathy in Finland and across the world, national and international networks, organisations and work environments in osteopathy
- Core competence areas in osteopathy and osteopathy services as part of the health care and social services system
- Definition and principles, core concepts and theoretical foundations and standards of osteopathy
- Searching for information, critical thinking and reflection
