Objective

The student will understand the concepts of inorganic and organic materials and the primary and secondary bonding and the effect of bonds on the main characteristics of materials. The student will understand the meaning of chemical reaction equations and their use for calculations. The student knows chemical formulas and can use them for calculating solvent concentrations and other basic chemical calculations. On completion of the course, the student knows the structure and characteristics of the organic materials (glues, varnishes, paints) used in conservation. On completion of the course, the student will understand how the chemical composition of polar and nonpolar solvents differ, and how they effect on materials/objects.

Content

The course covers the basics of inorganic chemistry and its relation to materials used in conservation. Chemical bonds, equations, concentrations of solutions and related calculations. The course also covers the basics of organic chemistry, compositions and functional groups. Properties of solvents and their use in conservation.

Evaluation scale
