Rhythm & Blues Workshop and Ensemble (5 cr)

Objective

The student knows how to function as a member of an ensemble. The student knows various styles of rhythm & blues and can delineate their role in an ensemble both as soloist and accompanist. The student can play/sing essential repertoire of different eras rhythm & blues from memory. The student is capable of taking on responsibilities related to working in an ensemble. The student develops interaction skills and can reflect on their own work and that of others, as well as express themselves both orally and in writing. The student is able to write and read music notation and knows the basics of rhythm & blues improvisation.

Tyypillisiä piirteitä R&B tyyliselle ohjelmistolle:
- Blues-tonaliteetti ja äänenväri?- Soolot ja improvisointi?- Afro-amerikkalainen rytmiikka
- Tanssittavuus & rytminen jatkumo
A) KICK OF 3op. (A ja B) ?tiivisperiodi jossa heti asian ytimessä. Kolmet treenit ja keikka. Tutustutaan ryhmään ja esitetään toisillemme mitä ehdittiin tekemään.

B) WORKSHOP 3 op. (A ja B) ??Lukujärjestyksen mukainen viikkoittainen kontaktiopetus.Kontaktiopetuksen lisäksi yhtyeet työskentelevät itseohjautuvasti.Jokainen workshop-kokoonpano valmistelee arvioitavaan esitykseen lyhyen konserttiohjelman (30min) jakson aikana valmistetusta ohjelmistosta :

-   5 yhteistä sävellystä ( Let the Good Times Roll, Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag, ?Isn’t She Lovely, Respect, And the Melody Still Lingers On
-  kaksi sävellystä 1950-, 1960-, 1970-, sekä 1980-luvulta
-  ohjelmisto esitetään ilman nuotteja
-Jakson aikana jokainen opiskelija kirjoittaa nuotit 1-2 biisiin ja harjoituttaa kappaleen yhtyellään. Jokainen opiskelija varautuu kertomaan lyhyesti valitsemansa biisin taustasta ja kappaleen merkityksestä. Syyskauden aikana pyritään järjestämään opettajakiertoa.


C) ENSEMBLE: 2 op.?- Opettaja-muusikko valitsee esitettävän taiteellisen kokonaisuuden - lyhytperiodi työskentelyä 20h kontaktia kaikkineen?- noin 4-5 harjoituskertaa (pidempiä)?- opettajamuusikko soittaa mahdollisesti yhtyeessä mukana ?- Esiintyminen(keikka) Rhythm Blues Backhanalissa

To pass the course, the student:
- is able to rehearse independently and under supervision
- has learned the course repertoire to a satisfactory level (for example, is able to perform from memory if needed)
- is able to play their instrument and perform the repertoire idiomatically
- is able to communicate with both the ensemble and the audience
- understands their role in an ensemble and can communicate their own musical ideas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Hyväksytty suoritus edellyttää kaikkien kolmen osa-alueen suorituksen .
A) KICK OF esiintyminen
B) WORKSHOP- osuus tentti
C) Ensemble keikka
Läsnäolo vaatimus noin 80% kontaktiopetukseen.
