Objective

After completing the course, the students are able to:
- identify characteristics specific to the clothing and fashion industry.
- identify the key points and aspects of ‘Vestonomi’ studies (Bachelor-level studies in fashion and clothing).
- present and verify their visual expression skills.
- recognize the three-dimensionality of the shape of a garment.

Content

Introduction to the clothing and fashion industry. Familiarization with the contents of ‘Vestonomi’ studies. Reflection and description of one’s own interest, strengths and motivation. Assignment on visual expression and visual perceptual skills. Assignment on managing the shape of a garment.

The online course in the Moodle Learning Platform is open 3. - 24.4.2024. Please note: the course closes at 3 p.m. on the last day.

This course unit is based on independent study. It is at the same time a pre-assignment course, on the basis of which 66 applicants are invited to the actual entrance examination of the Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing, to be held at the Arabia Campus in Helsinki on 28 - 29 May 2024. All of the course's more detailed instructions, assignments and assessment criteria can be found in Moodle.

In addition, please remember to submit your joint application (yhteishakulomake) in Studyinfo.fi (Opintopolku.fi)! Without an official joint application, you cannot be invited to the actual entrance examination of the Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing. On the other hand, please note, that completing the Introduction to Studies in Fashion and Clothing (Johdatus vaatetusalan opintoihin) does not, on its own, justify admission to the entrance examination without an official joint application through Studyinfo.fi.

The course is in Finnish and free of charge. If desired, it can be completed at Metropolia Open University of Applied Sciences, without intention to apply for the Bachelor-level degree programme in Fashion and Clothing.

You can enroll in the pre-assignment course on 13 March - 2 April 2024 in Metropolia's Open UAS enrollment system. The title of the course is 'Johdatus vaatetusalan opintoihin' - Introduction to Studies in Fashion and Clothing. You can study the online course in Moodle between 3 - 24 April 2024 (the course closes at 3 p.m. on the last day). A prerequisite for an approved course is that all parts of the course are completed and all the assignments returned (with approval) during the course's implementation period.

All students who have successfully completed the course will receive one credit point (1 ECTS) through Metropolia Open University of Applied Sciences into their transcript of records. For students admitted to the Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing, the completed course will be recognized as part of their studies.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The given assignments have been completed according to the instructions. The answers deal with the real issue. There are clear flaws in the contents of the answers. There are yet clear shortcomings in the perception of three-dimensionality. Visual expression and perception are yet deficient.

The given assignments have been completed according to the instructions. The student deals with an essential issue, taking into account different perspectives and using source material. The perception of three-dimensionality is partly valid. The student is capable of visual expression and perception, but the expression and/or technical implementation require development.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The given assignments have been completed according to the instructions. The student deals with an essential issue in a versatile way, taking into account different perspectives. The student incorporates issues from the source material smoothly into his/her answer and reaches his/her own conclusions. Perceiving three-dimensionality is fully equivalent to the task. Visual expression and perception indicate suitability for the degree programme in question.

Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for the course. If a student is applying to study in the Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing, he/she must be eligible to apply for higher education.
