Objective

On completion of the course, students will be able to communicate orally in key basic care situations and routine procedures. They will know and understand some healthcare texts. Students will develop and be encouraged to communicate in Finnish in typical routine health care situations and to communicate information about them both orally and in writing. The student's language competence is at least at level A2.2 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Content

The course provides practice in everyday nursing oral and written interaction, developing vocabulary and key grammatical structures needed in everyday nursing situations. The course will introduce some nursing texts.

Materials will be given by teacher and uploaded to Moodle.

Teaching methods

Course will be held face-to-face -teaching in Myllypuro campus. In addition, independent studying in the Moodle workspace.

Further information

This Finnish as a second language course is open to all Metropolia degree students. The course is primarily recommended for nursing students, as the content focuses on nursing.

Good studying skills and a lot of independent work is required. Book time for homework and independent studying on your calendar at least 8 h/week.

Part of the classes may be recorded and added to the Moodle workspace.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has achieved the course objectives at a satisfactory level. He/she will be able to cope with simple everyday interactions in healthcare, both written and oral. He/she will know some of the expressions used in the field and their contexts of use. Knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical structures in the field. He/she tries to participate in discussions in Finnish.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course well. He/she can manage in daily situations in the health care sector, both written and oral. He/she will be able to use key phrases and expressions and vocabulary. The student knows the main language structures needed in the field and tries to apply them in practice. The student will actively develop his/her professional language skills. He/she will actively participate in discussions.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course with distinction. He/she will be able to function in everyday language situations in his/her field, both orally and in writing. The student will be able to use professional phrases, expressions and vocabulary in a variety of situations. He/she will use some language structures fluently in oral and written expression. The student actively develops his/her professional Finnish language skills in all his/her activities.

Prerequisites

Prerequisite Finnish language skills at least at level A2.1, e.g. Finnish 1-3.
