Objective

The student
- Can reason and construe palliative care through person-centered narrative
- Can develop palliative care using the views of the patient, his next of kin, culture, arts and communities
- Can develop the strengths of the patient using the palliative care framework
- Can recognise the functions of multicultural communities in the person-centered palliative care
- Can apply person-centered care basics in the design and implementation of palliative care when evaluating the patient as an - individual and a member of his community
- Can increase the societal understanding of palliative care in the national and globalising context
- Can promote equality, social justice and participation in palliative care

Content

- The definition of person- and communitycentered care
- Person-centrism in palliative care
- Supporting the resources and participation of persons and communities
- Interacting, guiding and supporting the patient and his loved ones in palliative care
- The meaning of communities and society (the third sector and voluntary agencies, religious communities, the knowledge of citizens and understanding the services available for them, the social resources of communities and transparency)
- Death in the media
- The culture of death
- Art in palliative and hospice care

Content scheduling

The course consists of four themes and related tasks:
- people-centreness (task 1)
- empowering patient education (task 2)
- cultural perspective in palliative care (task 3)
- images of death in the media (tasks 4a and 4b)

The course is designed in such a way that it can be completed at your own pace during the course's implementation time. Pay attention to group work tasks that require scheduling with the group members. It is recommended to proceed in the order provided, see the periodization of the content. Please take care of your own scheduling and make the returns on time.

The student demonstrates competence in the basic content of the course, but there are deficiencies in his/her ability to find and interpret information and to apply the learned content to the context of working life.

The student demonstrates good competence in the content of the course. He/she is able to actively search for information and to identify its connection to working life. The student is able to analyse and apply the learned content to the context of working life.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student demonstrates versatile and extensive competence in the content of the
course. He/she has an excellent ability to search for relevant information. The student’s solutions demonstrate independence, responsibility, and skills in guiding others. His/her ability to apply the learned content to the context of working life exhibits creativity and versatility.

Assessment methods and criteria

The course has assignments that are evaluated with a fail-pass and assignments that are evaluated numerically from 0-5

Numerically evaluated assignments make up the overall grade of the course. All assignment must be completed in order to achieve an overall evaluation
Assignments that come in late without a valid reason can have a degrading effect on the overall evaluation
