Objective

The students are familiar with the theoretical fundamentals of counselling. They are able to apply the principles of dialogue to counselling. They can plan, implement, and assess counselling and guidance work in a goal-oriented way, listening to the service users from early childhood to late adulthood. The students are able to offer guidance while considering the individuals’ needs in both individual and group counselling. The students understand the distinctive features of online counselling in social services. They are familiar with the possibilities of digital environments in social services and have a basic knowledge of online guidance.

Content

Basics of individual, group, and community counselling. Ethics in counselling. Principles of dialogical interaction. Different approaches to counselling. Distinct roles of professionals in counselling work. Goal-oriented counselling, planning and evaluation in the social context. Feedback as a part of the counselling work. Reflecting on one’s own work. Specific features and requirements of online counselling. Opportunities and challenges of digitalization in social services. Simple Finnish vocabulary and phrases used in online and face to face interactions with diverse service users. Simple Finnish vocabulary and phrases used in counselling and guidance work with diverse service users.

Individual Counselling:

Group counselling:
* Contact workshops (practical group process; experiential methods),
* facilitation exercises and demos,

* Readings and a group exam with materials at hand

Assesment 50% individual councelling/ 50% group councelling

*Final Learning Diary: A Learning Diary focusing on the student´s own reflections about communication, counselling and guidance, dialogue, its practices and its possibilities in different contexts of social pedagogical work. 40%
*Other learning assignments: pass/fail
