Objective

On completion of the course, the student will be familiar with scholarly thinking, research
methods and strategies. The student be familiar with the scientific and qualitative research process. He/she will be able to choose the right research methods for solving a problem. The student will be familiar with both the thesis process methodology and project communication requirements.
The student will be able to present and report his/her Bachelor's thesis process. The student will be able to argue for his/her choices. The student will be able to use sources and is able to write the summary and abstract (in English). The student will actively follow research literature relevant to his/her own profession and is familiar with the expert publications.

Content

Basics of research with an emphasis on the Bachelor's thesis process. Reporting and presenting research and development work relevant to the student's own profession. Written and oral presentation of the final year project and Bachelor's thesis, expert terminology and concepts, research data management, outlining and structures, critical approach to source material, use of sources and argumentation.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has often been absent from the teaching sessions Activity during the lectures and rehearsals has been unsatisfactory and the student has difficulty to adopt the basic ideas of the topic and its importance for scientific work.
The student is able to identify some of the typical features in his/her own communication with the help of instructions and feedback. He/she can identify the different components of a communication process. The student writes messages with the help of instructions, retrieves information when guided and is able to use the information for his/her own output.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Student has taken part in all of the teaching sessions and learning assignments and his/her activity on the course has been good.
The studies have proceeded consistently. The student is able to understand the basic concepts of the course and he/she is capable of scientific thinking. The student is familiar with research tools and methods and she/he understands the importance of scientific thinking to his/her profession and his/her Bachelor's theses. As an expert, the student communicates in a structured, understandable and interesting way, and targets his/her messages to the recipient according to the situation. The student can justify his/her views. The student can acquire information in his/her own field of study and can use it critically. The student is able to prepare a goal-oriented written, oral or visual presentation to a target audience. The student is able to use his/her knowledge on text types and language.
The student works independently but there is still some need for further guidance from the teacher. The student has given enough attention for the subject and has an overall understanding of the subject.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the course objectives fully. The student has taken actively and constructively part in the teaching and the project. The student masters the topics of the course and is able to carry out his/her work independently according to the principles of scientific thinking. The student is able to apply and critically evaluate scientific methods and tools.
The student is willing and able to develop his/her Finnish language and communication skills as a part of his/her expertise and is able to communicate in a meaningful, creative and personal way. The student can use means of communication in a creative and appropriate way, and takes advantage of different channels and tools. The student argues his/her point with skill and shows, shares and develops his/her expertise in the community.
The student retrieves information independently and competently in order to produce new knowledge or new perspectives. The student uses language creatively and according to field practices
