Objective
The student
• participates in the development of a biological risk assessment and works as a member of a project team to identify an unknown bacterium
• uses, during the practical implementation phase,the main biochemical, microbiological and molecular biological working methods
• confirms the identification of the unknown bacterium by performing DNA sequence analysis using bioinformatics
• learns to report in a scientific style appropriate to the field.
Content
• Key microbiological, biochemical and molecular biological methods for bacterial identification: different staining and culturing techniques, antibiotic susceptibility testing, enzyme reactions, latex agglutination, electrophoresis, PCR, sequence analysis
• Microbial identification by MALDI TOF -MS
• Biological risk assessment and reporting

• is able to prepare a biological risk assessment and act as a leader or active member of a project team and implement the plan in a goal-oriented manner
• can work in a team and reorganise their work as necessary
• is able to present their team's plans and results both orally and in writing.

• is able to design a large and varied project with several sub-tasks
