Objective

The student can identify and explain different methods and tools to gather data over construction lifecycle and the resulting data representations, consisting of imaging data (point clouds from laser scanning, photogrammetry or depth cameras), sensor data (streams of observations e.g., from condition sensors of building automation systems, or positioning sensors of IoT systems) and event based progress data. The student can utilise common tools for data gathering and can programmatically process the collected data. The student can associate the gathered data with the design models of the built environment, and analyse and visualise it.

Content

• Introduction to data gathering in construction
• Imaging technologies (laser scanning, photogrammetry, depth cameras)
• Point clouds and their formats
• Challenges with point cloud data
• Comparison of BIM models with point clouds
• Types of sensors used in construction
• Data streams from sensors
• Data models for sensor systems and sensor data
• Visualization of sensor data on a BIM model
• Event and status data from supply chains

Qualifications

Programming skills in Python and Javascript sufficient to
• implement simple algorithms
• utilise libraries such as IfcOpenShell or That Open Engine
• access the APIs of systems providing data about built environment

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has achieved the minimal objectives of the course. The student will be able to identify, define and use the concepts, representations, and formats related to image and sensor based data gathering over construction lifecycle, and is familiar with the relevant software development tools. The student has completed the required learning exercises at minimum requirement level. The competencies acquired form the basis for the student to build their knowledge in construction sector software development, eventually enabling a job position in software testing or development.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course well, even though the knowledge and skills need still improvement in some areas. The student will be able to identify, define and use the concepts, representations, and formats related to image and sensor based data gathering over construction lifecycle, understands their interrelations and applications, and can participate in developing software solutions utilising them. The student has completed the required learning exercises at good or satisfactory level. The student has the capability to apply the knowledge in further studies and regular work settings.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course with excellence. The student will be able to identify, define and use the concepts, representations, and formats related to image and sensor based data gathering over construction lifecycle, can analyse and define new interrelations and applications for them, and can independently develop innovative software solutions utilising them. The student has an excellent basis to apply the knowledge in further studies and in software development work.
