Objective

The student has an overview of how to run unit operations in biotechnology and food engineering and s/he knows their operation principles.
The student is able to operate these pieces of equipment, including measurement, control as well as data collection and data processing.
The student is able to draw up test reports, to examine the validity of results and sources of error.
The student knows how to find physical properties of materials needed in these tests.

Content

1. Operation with laboratory equipment; like filtration, membrane filtration, milling, sieving, cell disruption, drying etc.
2. Design and implementation of experiments, search for physical properties of materials.
3. Measurements, control and collection and handling of data.
4. Reporting.

Bioprocess engineering, Heat transfer and fluid mechanics 1, Heat transfer and fluid mechanics 2, Basics of Automation

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student has familiarized him-/herself with the instructions in advance.
2. The student is able to work safely in the laboratory. (S)he can use laboratory and other equipment and chemicals in right manner and (s)he knows the basic use of automation equipment.
3. The report correspond the standard report and contains all sections needed without major mistakes. The accuracy of the results is correct.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. Opiskelija on suunnitellut työ suorittamisen etukäteen.
2. Opiskelija työskentelee huolellisesti ja tavoitteellisesti ja ymmärtää ja osaa käyttää automaation peruslaitteita.
3. Raportti on rakenteeltaan selkeä ja siinä on painotettu oikeita asioita. Tulosten käsittelyssä on arvioitu tuloksen luotettavuutta ja oikeellisuutta. Opiskelija osaa tehdä itsenäisesti johtopäätöksiä. Kieliasu on hyvä.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student has checked over needed calculations and time schedule, (s)he has planned the different steps of the work and is aware of the equipment to be used.
2. The student is self-employed and self-imposed and can independently use automation measuring devices and equipment.
3. Student works according to the schedule. He/she has combined theory and practice in a good way and used relevant sources of information. The student has evaluated the most important sources of error.
