Descriptions

The degree programme in Energy and Environmental Technology is designed to provide students with a strong preparation for working in the field of energy and environmental engineering, taking into account today's challenges such as climate change, sustainable development and the circular economy. The engineer graduating from the degree programme will be placed in a wide range of jobs, including design, commissioning and management positions in a variety of companies in the field.

In addition to strong technical skills, energy and environmental engineers are expected to have excellent interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills. Teaching emphasises the application of theory to practice, learning by doing and problem solving through projects. Teaching projects are carried out in Metropolia's Innovation Hubs and in companies in the field.

The degree programme has two main majors: energy production technology and environmental technology. Both majors offer the option of a green transition track.

The Energy Production Technology major focuses on the complexities of energy production, storage and use, in particular the principles of operation of energy systems and power plants and their environmental impact. Studies will cover energy production technologies, energy storage solutions and systems management. Engineers graduating from the major will be able to design and maintain safe, efficient and environmentally compliant energy production systems that meet today's energy needs in a sustainable manner.

The Environmental Engineering major provides a broad range of skills in environmental protection, water treatment and waste management. Studies emphasise the principles of sustainable development and the design and analysis of solutions to reduce environmental impacts. The engineers in the major have a strong understanding of environmental impacts and their management, and are familiar with the legal and regulatory framework. Engineers graduating from the major will be able to develop environmentally friendly solutions and promote the circular economy in companies and communities.

Engineers working in a project environment can be part of multidisciplinary teams combining technical expertise, environmental considerations and sustainable development principles. They can participate in research and development projects aimed at new innovations and better climate and environmental protection.

Development

The curriculum will be developed together with businesses and industry. The necessary changes have been collected from industry and students. the curriculum was approved by the Advisory Board at the meeting on 8 November 2024.

Further information

The curriculum is copied from the previous curriculum (TXO24S1). The needs for changes to the curriculum have been collected during 2024 from students, industry and the advisory board. The curriculum has been amended in line with the Metropolia OPS25 degree structure. The curriculum work has revised all curriculum course titles and contents.

U!REKA (1 credit) is a part of the Sustainable development in the field of engineering and laboratory science (5 credits) course. Artificial Intelligence and Information Security (0.5 credits) is part of the Orientation to the profession and studies (5 credits) and this is included in the course description.
