Descriptions

The Bachelor studies in Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering offers a well-rounded education that prepares you to be a top performer of the future.

The programme combines strong technical skills with creative problem-solving abilities. You will learn to exploit the latest technologies in biotechnology and chemistry and develop sustainable solutions to global challenges. Upon graduation, you can work in areas such as new food development, bio-refining or designing environmentally friendly production processes.

The degree programme has two main subjects: biotechnology and food engineering, and clean production technologies, which are selected at the application stage. For the first two years, students study mainly together, but subject-specific laboratory courses provide in-depth knowledge from an early stage. In the third and fourth years of study, the focus on their own major deepens through major courses, internships and thesis work.

Teaching combines theory and practice, using the modern laboratory facilities on campus, where students can apply what they have learned in practice.

Development

Feedback on the implementation of the curriculum is collected from the Degree Programme's Advisory Board, as well as students and partner companies. The feedback on the basis of the curriculum and implementations are developed every year.

Objective

The joint studies in the degree programme provide a solid foundation for the major in bio- and chemical engineering. Students will initially become familiar with the environment in which the field operates and, as their studies progress, will become more familiar with the potential applications of bio- and chemical engineering and the development of innovative technical solutions. These solutions can be applied to the design and production of products and processes.

Key competence areas:

Behaviour of substances and materials
Students will understand the properties and interactions of substances and materials, enabling their efficient and appropriate use in industrial applications.

Process knowledge and production management
The student knows the principles of production processes and is able to optimise them from the point of view of energy efficiency, resource efficiency and sustainable production.

Safety, quality and environmental responsibility
The student will be able to consider environmental, health and safety requirements in all activities and understand the importance of quality management in process development.

Sustainable development and circular economy
Students will be able to apply the principles of sustainable development and circular economy in the design of production processes and technical solutions, promoting environmentally friendly and resource-wise operations.

The degree programme prepares students for a wide range of specialist jobs in biotechnology and chemical engineering, combining technical skills, innovation and sustainable thinking.
