Introduction to Furniture ConservationLaajuus (5 ECTS)

Objective

The student will understand the difference between conservation and restoration. The student will be familiar with different fields of conservation and understands the goals, structure and specific methods of furniture conservation. The student will be familiar with the terminology used in conservation. The student will know the key materials used in conservation and their characteristics and is able to find from different reliable sources more specific data concerning the use of these materials. The student knows the safety instructions concerning these materials as well as their sustainable use. The student is familiar with tools and equipment used in conservation.

Theory of conservation; operating environment of conservators.
Key materials in conservation.
Characteristics of key materials, work safety and sustainability.
Basic material identification methods.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is familiar with the definitions and targets in conservation as well as the main operating environments of conservators. The student has a picture of the basic concepts of the course and knows conservation theory on a basic level. The student masters the basic elements of the course and understands the key contents. The student is able to acquire independently reliable data upon course theme.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student knows the main operating environments of conservators and understands the role and the significance of conservation in the field of cultural heritage. The student knows the different fields and targets of conservation. The student knows the basic concepts and definitions introduced during the course. The student masters the course theme both in theory and in practice and has shown good practical and theoretical knowledge. The student’s ability to work independently is sufficient. The student is able to acquire independently reliable data upon course theme and he/she is able to analyze this data.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows the main operating environments of conservators and understands the role and the significance of conservation in the field of cultural heritage. The student knows the basic concepts, specialization areas and targets of conservation. The student understands the course theme both in theory and in practice and has shown good practical and theoretical skills.
The student is able to fulfill independently both theoretical and practical tasks. The student is able to acquire independently reliable data and analyze this data. The student is able to take part in discussion upon the course theme and ground his/her opinion by using relevant concepts. The student works independently and shows self-motivation and creativity in problem solving.
