STUDYING IN THE DEGREE PROGRAMME OF ELDERLY CARE
Bachelor’s Degree in Elderly Care (UAS) is a polytechnic degree in social services and health care. The scope of the degree is 210 ECTS and the calculated study period takes 3.5 years. The degree is based on international and national descriptions of education, national strategies and quality recommendations for old-age work, Bachelor of Elderly Care degree and Metropolia competences, work life orientation and multidisciplinary gerontological research data
Learning in the degree programme is based on the common learning goals of Metropolia UAS degrees, which consist of learning skills; ethical competence; work community competence; innovation competence; multicultural competence; and technological competence. Pedagogical activities are guided by the principles of collaborative learning and project learning
Work life orientation is carried out in practical internships in various environments for old-age work (43 ECTS) and in the projects and innovation studies included in tuition, which are carried out in cooperation with older people, various agents in old-age work and work life. The objectives of the project tasks are based on the development needs of work life and supporting the quality of life of older people
At Metropolia, the students are encouraged to participate in international activities, such as international internships, exchange programmes and projects. Studies can also be completed in multiprofessional and multidisciplinary learning environments, for example in the HyMy village of Metropolia and in Metropolia development projects in innovation hubs. Work life experts act as instructors for students' internships, as well as partners and mentors in teaching, projects and development projects carried out in working life.
The studies in the degree programme include guidance on studies from the first semester onwards in accordance with the student's own personal study plan, HOPS. The studies also include guidance on professional growth. The student's prior learning (AHOT) is utilized in the studies. The students conduct their own competence inventory, which enables the students’ competence to be identified and recognised as part of the competence required by the degree programme.
