STUDYING IN THE DEGREE PROGRAMME OF ELDERLY CARE
Bachelor’s Degree in Elderly Care (UAS) is a polytechnic degree in social services and health care. The scope of the degree is 210 ECTS and the calculated study period takes 3.5 years. The degree is based on international and national descriptions of education, national strategies and quality recommendations for old-age work, Bachelor of Elderly Care degree and Metropolia competences, work life orientation and multidisciplinary gerontological research data
Learning in the degree programme is based on the common learning goals of Metropolia UAS degrees, which consist of learning skills; ethical competence; work community competence; innovation competence; multicultural competence; and technological competence. Pedagogical activities are guided by the principles of collaborative learning and project learning
Work life orientation is carried out in practical internships in various environments for old-age work (43 ECTS) and in the projects and innovation studies included in tuition, which are carried out in cooperation with older people, various agents in old-age work and work life. The objectives of the project tasks are based on the development needs of work life and supporting the quality of life of older people
At Metropolia, the students are encouraged to participate in international activities, such as international internships, exchange programmes and projects. Studies can also be completed in multiprofessional and multidisciplinary learning environments, for example in the HyMy village of Metropolia and in Metropolia development projects in innovation hubs. Work life experts act as instructors for students' internships, as well as partners and mentors in teaching, projects and development projects carried out in working life.
The studies in the degree programme include guidance on studies from the first semester onwards in accordance with the student's own personal study plan, HOPS. The studies also include guidance on professional growth. The student's prior learning (AHOT) is utilized in the studies. The students conduct their own competence inventory, which enables the students’ competence to be identified and recognised as part of the competence required by the degree programme.
STARTING POINTS OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME AND THE EXPERTISE OF BACHELORS OF ELDERLY CARE
The basis of the degree in old-age work is the holistic idea of people and seeing old age as an individual and valuable phase of life. The training is based on the view of elderly persons as resource-based and active agents in their own lives and communities. The activity within the degree and the content of the studies are guided by the ethical aspects and principles of old-age work. The degree works in various networks of old-age work advancing multidisciplinary expertise and development partnerships. The curriculum for the degree aims to meet the future competence needs of old-age work. Memory ability work; competence required by digitalisation; and gerontological service guidance expertise will be strengthened throughout the studies.
Bachelors of elderly care assess the individual needs of older people and their close ones in various life situations and support implementing their unique life style, agency and inclusion. Bachelors of elderly care operate in the operating environments of services for the elderly, taking into account the specific features of client groups. Bachelors of elderly care promote in their work the well-being, health and occupational performance of older people.
Bachelor of elderly care assess the future development needs of services for the elderly and act as a service developer in multidisciplinary cooperation with other agents in old-age work. Bachelors of elderly care also develop their own professional field as well as societally influence the development targets in old- age work and elderly care. Bachelors of elderly care have the qualifications to work in the management of old-age work.

DEVELOPING THE CURRICULUM AND WORK LIFE COOPERATION
The curriculum for the degree programme in old-age work is based on an analysis of the future needs of both older people and work life and the most recent information related to ageing. The degree programme emphasises a wide-range of competence in old-age work. The development of the curriculum for the degree programme in old-age work is guided by national competences for the Bachelors of Elderly Care. The curriculum has been drawn up in cooperation with work life, teachers, and students.
