Objective

The student acquires basic skills in problem solving of conservation and restoration of modern and contemporary art in practice.
Applying the theory, philosophy, concepts and material analyses of modern and contemporary art, the student is able to work independently or as part of a group on the practical conservation of modern and contemporary art.
In practical conservation, the student is able to utilize the Decision Model of Modern and Contemporary Art, the concepts of the Artist Interview as well as various documentation models and logically justify the decisions made.
The student is able to document the object under conservation, its condition and materials, as well as the conservation and restoration work done in writing and with photographic images.
Through a thorough visual and material analysis of the object, the student is able to prepare a conservation plan with its reasons and to conserve - restore the object, based on well-founded choices.
Students deepen their teamwork skills while working in small groups.

Content

Based on the theoretical and material knowledge, obtained during the Modern Materials, Theory of Modern and Contemporary Art Conservation course, the student implements a practical conservation project either independently or as part of a small group.
Practical conservation work and appropriate written and photographic documentation, as well as analysis of the materials of the object under conservation and interpretation of the results.
Independent study of modern and contemporary art conservation publications and research, as part of conservation plan and decision-making.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to outline the subject area of practical conservation and restoration of modern and contemporary art and knows at a basic level the related theory, documentation methods, analytical techniques, materials and practical working methods. The student understands the basics of the course and understands the main content of the course. The student understands the necessary theoretical and applied principles related to the topic and is able to perform documentation, material analysis and prepare a conservation plan at a basic level. The student is able to solve problems at a basic level in practice. The student is able to acquire some information independently. The student has difficulties in interpreting the acquired information and knowledge and choosing suitable working methods and materials. The student has difficulty justifying the choices made. Practical work is not independent enough and there are shortcomings in the end-result. The student has difficulty acting as a group member in an encouraging and group-strengthening way.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has a very good understanding of the subject area of practical conservation and restoration of modern and contemporary art and is well acquainted with the related theory, documentation methods, analytical techniques, materials and practical working methods. The student demonstrates a good theoretical and applied knowledge. The student is expertly able to reason the chosen analysis methods, conservation materials and conservation methods, and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with professional practices. The student understands well the whole in both theory and practice and has achieved a good level of knowledge and skills. The end-result of the practical work is of a good standard. The work has been sufficiently independent. The student is able to acquire information independently, is able to critically analyse this information and has a good problem-solving ability. As a member of the group, the student acts to encourage and strengthen the work of the group.

The student has a very good command of the subject area of practical conservation and restoration of modern and contemporary art and has a very good knowledge of the related theory, documentation methods, analysis techniques, materials and practical working methods. The student has achieved an excellent level of knowledge and skills. The student demonstrates excellent theoretical and applied knowledge and is able to apply what he / she has learned well. The student is able to work largely independently on both written and skill-based assignments. The student is able to acquire information independently and to analyse and apply information. The student participates in the discussion with arguments using the concepts of the field. The student is able to justify the choices he / she has made expertly and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with the practices of the professional field. The result of the practical work is of a very good standard. The student works consistently, showing initiative and creative problem-solving ability. As a member of the group, the student acts to encourage and strengthen the work of the group.
