Objective

The student is familiar with the history, materials and methods of historical lining techniques for canvas paintings, such as wax-resin lining, flour-glue (glue-paste) lining and sturgeon glue lining, their advantages and disadvantages, and aging in theory and practice. The student is able to, visually or with the help of necessary tests, identify the type of lining and its materials as well as their condition of preservation.

The student is able to evaluate the suitability of different types of lining techniques and materials for paintings painted on canvas depending on the materials, age and types of damage of the paintings and to identify situations where old lining requires conservation and restoration measures.
The student is able to evaluate the ethical and aesthetic suitability of the use of different lining techniques and materials in relation to the benefits or risks of the technique used.

Content

Historically used lining methods for canvas paintings, materials used in linings, tools, and modern modifications of these methods as well as materials.
For each lining type, one demonstration lining will be performed within the group.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to understand the history, materials and methods of old lining techniques for paintings painted on canvas, such as wax-resin lining, glue-paste lining and sturgeon glue lining, and has a basic knowledge of related theory. The student masters the basics of the course and understands the main content of the course. The student understands the necessary theoretical and applied principles related to the topic. The student is able to acquire some information independently. The student has difficulties in interpreting the acquired information and knowledge. Practical work is not independent enough and there are shortcomings in the end-result. The student has difficulty acting as a group member in an encouraging and group-strengthening way.

The student is well acquainted with the history, materials and methods of old lining techniques for paintings painted on canvas, such as wax-resin lining, glue-paste lining and sturgeon glue lining, and is well acquainted with the related theory. The student demonstrates a good theoretical and applied knowledge. The student is able to justify his / her choices expertly. The student masters the whole in both theory and practice and has achieved a good level of knowledge and skills. The work has been sufficiently independent. The student is able to acquire information independently and is able to critically analyse this information. As a member of the group, the student acts to encourage and strengthen the work of the group.

The student is well acquainted with most of the historical theory, related to lining techniques and has achieved an excellent level of knowledge and skills. The student demonstrates excellent theoretical and applied knowledge and is able to apply well what he or she has learned. The student is able to work largely independently on both written and skill-based assignments. The student is able to acquire information independently and to analyse and apply information. The student participates in the discussion with arguments using the concepts of the field. The student is expertly able to justify the choices he / she has made and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with the practices of the professional field. The student works consistently, showing initiative and creative problem-solving ability. As a member of the group, the student acts to encourage and strengthen the work of the group.
