Work profiles of graduated UAS students:
In the social and health care sector, prosthetists and orthotists are mainly employed by companies manufacturing assistive devices as well as by assistive device units of hospitals and various institutions. They are also competent to work as independent entrepreneurs.
Prosthetists and orthotists work in client service, in middle management or similar in planning and manufacturing processes, and as professional experts of their field in rehabilitation groups. In addition, they can work in sales and marketing of companies selling assistive devices and rehabilitation equipment. In the future, assistive devices related to environment control and communication are part of the prosthetists’ and orthotists’ work profile.
Core competence areas of prosthetists and orthotists consist of 1) Client-oriented, multiprofessional competence, 2) Assessment of assistive device needs and functional capacity, 3) Service competence in assistive devices, 4) Working methods and competence in materials, 5) Competence in entrepreneurship and business activities 6) Research and development competence.
Studies focus on working life oriented approach, international activities and challenges of future, as well as reflective, critical and research-based approach to work. Students have the opportunity to participate in multiprofessional projects to develop their competence within their UAS or in collaboration with the working life. Students also have the possibility to participate in student exchange.
Specific admission requirements:
Standard requirements for universities of applied sciences apply.
The competence-based curriculum and its learning outcomes describe what kinds of competences students are expected to achieve and help students assess their own existing competence and future learning. Students’ individual choices and recognition of prior learning (RPL), complete with flexible implementation models, allow students to build their own individual learning pathways. Each student’s own learning pathway is described in the individual study plan (ISP).
Guidelines for completing studies and evaluation:
Criteria for completing studies and their evaluation are found in the study plans of each study unit. The lecturer of the course is responsible for the evaluation. Criteria for evaluation and means to complete the course are given in the beginning of each course. Student competence is evaluated based on a two-cycle evaluation framework unless individual criteria for the course exist.
Requirements for graduation:
Completion of all studies included in the curriculum.
Development
Additional information:
The curriculum for the Degree Programme in Prosthetics and Orthotics has been developed in cooperation with students, alumni, representatives at the workplace and the negotiation committee of the degree programme. In their meeting 12th of January, the negotiation committee supported the development work done and decided to recommend the implementation of the revised curriculum. By encouraging different forms of cooperation, such as projects carried out with the workplace and supervision and evaluation practices related to work placements, we gain knowledge from the work environment, which will be used to develop the curriculum further. Every term we organize development discussions involving each of the student groups providing us with valuable information on development targets and implementation of studies.
