Objective

The student is aware of the typical stages involved in the product development process. The student has an understanding of the role product development plays in both Finnish and international companies.

The student familiarizes themselves with the product development process through theoretical knowledge as well as practical involvement in a product development project. The student is capable of considering the target audience in product development.

Additionally, the student can utilize lifecycle thinking to support product development.

The student has an understanding of the factors that can influence the success of product development.

Content

1. The significance of product development for a company
2. Stages of the product development process (Idea generation & conceptualization, requirements specification, testing & development, production planning & execution, market entry, monitoring and further development)
3. Life cycle assessment as support for product development
4. The importance of consumer insight in successful product development
5. Practical product development project for a food and/or other bioproduct

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student recognizes the significance of product development in a company.
2. The stages of the product development process are superficially managed.
3. The application of life cycle assessment in product development is minimal.
4. In a practical product development project, the student's applicative skills are limited. Understanding the needs of consumers (target audience) in product development is limited.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student understands the significance of product development for a company.
2. The stages of the product development process are well-managed, but details may need clarification.
3. The application of life cycle assessment is reasonable, but not necessarily exceptional.
4. In a practical product development project, the student applies their learning, but challenges may arise in certain areas. The needs of consumers (target audience) have been well considered.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student demonstrates a profound understanding of the significance of product development for a company.
2. The student masters the stages of the product development process, showcasing in-depth knowledge of each phase.
3. The application of life cycle assessment in product development is commendable, reflecting a strong understanding of sustainable product development principles.
4. In a practical product development project, the student exhibits excellent applicative skills and the ability to apply their learning effectively. The student shows a profound understanding of the needs and expectations of consumers (target audience) from the perspective of product development.
