The Master of Engineering degree is currently the highest degree-level in universities of applied sciences in the field of technology in Finland.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

Students have the right to apply for the recognition of prior learning. The recognition is based on the skills of the student regardless of the ways the fore mentioned expertise has been acquired. The student has the responsibility to demonstrate the skills required in the study objectives and to provide the required information and documentation based on which the decision for approval will be made.

Profile of the programme

The extent of the degree is 60 ECTS credits and the duration is 1.5 years.The degree consists of Professional Studies (30 ECTS credits) and Master’s thesis project (30 ECTS credits). The title granted to student after studies is Master of Engineering.
Master of Engineering degree produces the same competence to public office as the Master’s degree.

A graduate in Master of Engineering in Information Technology works in advanced specialist tasks in the field of ICT, focusing on using modern tools and methods in Finland and abroad. A graduate works for example in advanced specialist tasks in international engineering surroundings of ICT industries.

Key learning outcomes

The aim of the Master's degree is to prepare the student for advanced specialist tasks in international engineering surroundings in the field of ICT. The degree provides a student the latest knowledge in a chosen specialisation option, an ability to conduct applied research projects, information acquisition skills, adaptation of new knowledge, the latest knowledge in advanced programming and problem-solving skills.

Graduation requirements

A student is eligible to graduate when he/she has completed all the required courses set for the degree as a present student (extent 60 ECTS credits).

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences course assessment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. Students must be informed at the beginning of the course on the assessment principles, which must be based on the course objectives. Assessment takes primarily place for each course and applies to the students who have registered and been accepted on the course. If necessary, different components of a course may be assessed individually. If the course consists of several components, the teacher may point this out in the assessment principles contained in the implementation plan.

The assessment scale is as follows: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), very satisfactory (2), satisfactory (1), fail (0) and pass (P).

Mode of study

Studies are designed and implemented in such a way that students in full-time employment can participate.Studies consist of lectures, laboratory work, workshops, assignments, and projects as well as independent studying.
