Objective

On completion of the course, the student knows the most important fundamental concepts of modern telecommunication. The student masters the terminology of telecommunications so that he or she is able to follow the development of the area and search additional information about it.

- Basic concepts of transmission
- Signals and their basic properties, time and frequency domain, signal levels, link budget
- Digitalisation of speech, PCM

Standards, OSI and TCP/IP reference models:
- Understands the meaning of OSI and TCP/IP reference models

General structure of telecommunication networks, basic concepts of transmission:
- Understands the central concepts of transmission

Signals and their basic properties, time and frequency domain, signal levels, link budget:
- Understands the basic properties of signals in time and frequency domain
- Understands the concept of link budget and decibel

Digitalisation of speech, PCM:
- Understands the process of speech digitalisation in PCM systems

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Standards, OSI and TCP/IP reference models:
- Is familiar with the most important concepts of OSI and TCP/IP reference models

General structure of telecommunication networks, basic concepts of transmission:
- Is able to apply the central concepts of transmission

Signals and their basic properties, time and frequency domain, signal levels, link budget:
- Understands the significance of analyzing signals in time and frequency domain
- Is able to analyze simple link budgets using decibels

Digitalisation of speech, PCM:
- Understands the most important methods used in PCM systems

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

- Understands the function of OSI and TCP/IP reference model layers

General structure of telecommunication networks, basic concepts of transmission:
- Understands well the central concepts of transmission

- Is able to analyze more complicated link budgets using decibels
