Objective

The student knows the organic reaction mechanisms, and is able to conclude on their basis the reaction products in organic reactions.

The student understands how the reaction mechanisms are utilized in the design of synthesis and in their implementation.
The student knows the basics of qualitative analysis of organic compounds, knows the working principles of IR, MS and NMR equipment and the interpretation of spectroscopic data

Content

1. The basics of IR, MS and NMR spectrometry equipment and their working principle
2. The basics of IR, MS and NMR spectra interpretation
3. The principles of organic reaction mechanisms
4. The reaction series and retro-synthetic analysis

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student
1. knows the basics of IR- and MS -spectrometric measurements, the operating principles of the equipment and the different sample preparation techniques
2. knows how to identify different simple organic compounds by using IR- MS- and NMR-spectra.
3. knows how to perform IR- and MS-measurements and to draw up a report that includes the required sections
4. knows how different functional groups will react, the basics of reaction mechanisms and how molecular structure affects the course of the reaction
5. knows the importance of the reaction series in preparation or analysis of a compound

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student
1. understands the basics of IR- and MS -spectrometric measurements, the operating principles of equipment and the different sample preparation techniques
2. knows how to identify the structure of different simple unknown organic compounds by IR- MS- and NMR-spectra.
3. works carefully and purposefully when making the measurements, and is able to make independent conclusions. The report is clear in structure and language
4. knows how different functional groups will react, their reaction mechanisms and how molecular structure affects the course of the reaction
5. understands the importance of the reaction series in the preparation or in the analysis of a compound

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
1. is able to evaluate the different methods, sample techniques and device parameters’ impact on the IR and MS spectrometry measurements, knows different sample preparation techniques.
2. is able to identify complex structures of the unknown compound by MS and NMR spectra
3. works independently, on their own initiative and is goal-oriented. He/she is able to plan and schedule the work in a reasonable way. The language used in the report and discussion of the results are excellent.
4. knows how different functional groups will react, their reaction mechanisms and is able to deduce the reaction product from molecular structure and reagents.
5. knows how to use reaction series and retrosystesis to plan production of compounds while developing problem-solving skills.
