Objective
After completing the course, the student will be aware of the situational nature of language use in healthcare and will be able to adapt their own language use according to the situation. They are familiar with and understand different types of texts used in healthcare. Students develop and are encouraged to communicate in Finnish in changing situations in healthcare and to convey information both orally and in writing. The student’s language skills are at level B1.2 of the European Framework of Reference.
Content
The course involves practising everyday verbal and written communication in the healthcare field, expanding vocabulary, and learning key grammatical structures needed in different healthcare situations. The course introduces students to different types of healthcare texts.

Teaching at Myllypuro campus. Dates and times change every week, so please check schedule.

Further information
This Finnish as a second language course is open to all Metropolia degree students. The course is recommended primarily for nursing students, as its content is nursing-focused.
Good studying skills and a lot of independent work is required. Book time for homework and independent studying on your calendar at least 5 h/week.
The course is at language level B1.1 (CEFR).

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student has achieved the objectives of the course satisfactorily. They endeavour to cope with simple everyday interaction situations in healthcare, both in writing and orally. They know some phrases used in the field and when to use them. They are familiar with the vocabulary and grammatical structures of their field. The student participates in common interaction situations in Finnish.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student has achieved the objectives of the course well. They can handle everyday situations in the healthcare field, both verbally and in writing. They know the key phrases and expressions used in the field and can use the vocabulary efficiently. The student has a good grasp of the key language structures needed in the field and can apply them in practice. The student actively works to improve their professional language skills. They participate actively in discussions.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student has achieved the objectives of the course commendably. They perform effectively in everyday language use situations in their field, both orally and in writing, and are able to take the requirements of the situation into account. The student uses a variety of phrases and expressions as well as field-specific vocabulary flexibly. They use even demanding language structures fluently in both oral and written communication. The student actively develops their professional Finnish language skills in all their activities.

Qualifications
Previous knowledge of Finnish at level B1.1 or higher, e.g. courses Finnish 1-4 or the contents of the books Suomen mestari 1 and 2.
