Objective
The course provides a foundation for multimedia communication. After completing the course the student is familiar with standards and technologies related to various multimedia components like speech, audio, digital images and digital video. The student can estimate the uncompressed bit rate of multimedia information and understands the requirements for compression. The student knows the compression methods and is able to manipulate multimedia data using software tools.
Content
The course covers formats, compression methods and standards of multimedia information. The methods include Analysis by Synthesis and Algebraic Codebook Excitation for speech compression, the Psychoacoustic Model and Sub-band Coding for music compression, Discrete Cosine Transformation (DCT), Wavelets, Motion Estimation and Compensation and Video Object Planes for video compression. Standards included are G.7xx, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.263 and H.264 among others.
