Learning outcomes
The student knows and recognizes biomolecules, their functional groups and their ability to bond and form linkages. He/she understands how organic biomolecules form compounds and their features. He/she is able to recognize eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and their features. He/she is familiar with genome structure, definition of the gene and gene regulation. The student can use basic equipment of biological laboratory.
Content
Structures, features and functions of biomolecules (lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins). Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structures. Different genome structures, genes (concepts and terms). Cell cycle, DNA replication and mutations. Transcription and translation.
Operation at microbiological and biological laboratories; for example centrifugation, sterilization, small volume pipetting, concentration determination and aseptic techniques.
