Learning outcomes

The student can modify the structure and properties of materials by processing, study material structures and measure the essential material properties.

Content

1. Processing methods of materials
2. Optical microscopy
3. Measuring of material properties
4. Vocabulary needed in the description of material properties and other subject-related vocabulary. An oral presentation in English. (English 1 ECTS)

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student can measure hardness with an appropriate method.
2. The student can measure the strength and ductility properties of materials.
3. The student can prepare a metallographic sample.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student recognizes the phase structures of iron-based alloys.
2. The student can measure the essential properties of polymers.
3. The student can measure impact toughness.
4. The student can carry out heat treatments for steels.
5. The student can utilize forming as a strengthening method of metals.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student can deduce the properties of metal alloys by their microstructure.
2. The student can carry out proper material processing in order to obtain desired properties.
