Objective
Students
- identify the laboratory’s internal and external clients
- comply with the principles of client-centred service
-understand the significance of pre-analytical factors to the results of laboratory analyses and guide clients according to guidelines. They take, handle, preserve and dispatch laboratory samples to a high quality standard. Students are able to carry out patient examinations and sample tests performed in primary health care. Students identify factors relating to patient safety and well-being in sampling and patient examinations. They work aseptically, safely and in compliance with occupational ergonomics.
Content
Laboratory work process, internal and external clients, principles of client-centred service; privacy protection; referring clients to laboratory examinations; pre-analytical factors, reference values; blood, excretion, secretion and cell samples; the most common sample tests and patient examinations performed at primary health care laboratories; preservation and dispatch of samples; occupational and patient safety; asepsis, ergonomics; waste management.
