Objective
Students are familiar with the most common drugs and causes of poisoning, the use of which may involve therapeutic drug monitoring and toxicology screens. Students are aware of the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, adverse effects and interactions of drugs and toxic substances. Students command the pre-analytical requirements of therapeutic drug monitoring and toxicology screening. Students become capable of monitoring therapeutic drug levels and performing toxicology screens and know how to interpret and assess the reliability of the results.
Content
Basics of pharmacotherapy: key drug groups and their typical representatives, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, adverse effects and interactions
Basics of toxicology: misused substances as causes of poisoning
Therapeutic drug monitoring, toxicology screens and drug analyses: collection, handling and preservation of samples, key techniques, interpretation and reliability of results.
Special characteristics of pharmacotherapy for elderly people and children.
