KX00DH53 Modal Ear Training/Solfege (3 ECTS)

For everyone: an optional study course in tuning
Timing: 2.-4. year

The teacher is Markku Nikula

Competence goals:
The student develops his auditory expression in modal pop/jazz music and frees himself as a musician from his major-minor tonal thinking habit and thus develops himself towards versatile musical expression. The student gets the basic skills to express modal melodies and chords while singing and writing and gets the skills to work independently.

Course content
– melodies using the most common modes (eg. Church Modes)
– more demanding modal melodies
– bass lines
– one- and (two)-voice melody dictations
– triadic-, seventh chord- and ninth chord and ‘Slash chord’ voicings
– modal chord progressions


Teaching and forms of work
– group teaching with practical singing and listening exercises

Evaluation methods
– participation in teaching
– continuous evaluation
– peer review
– learning tasks
– display test (written and oral test)

Exercise and working environment
– oral expression
– transcription
