Location and time

Period 1 & 2 (Fall 2025) Regular attendance expected. Tuesdays 10:15-11:45 ja Wednesdays 9:30-11:00.

Dynamic and collaborative learning environment that provides lots of opportunities to practise the material discussed. We are concentrating in spoken Chinese in real-life situations.

Student workload

4 credits, equivalent to 108 hours of work, divided as follows: • Zoom lessons: 38 hours • Homework and study of material taught: 65+ hours

Content scheduling

Students will learn to understand and converse in real-life situations in Chinese. The course is a survival-course in daily activities in Chinese environment including meeting with people, asking for directions, buying tickets, visiting restaurants, renting an apartment, telling about family and friends, hospital visits, finding a job, post office visits, etc.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Students • are able to pronounce most of the sounds of spoken Chinese sufficiently well so as to be understood. • have learnt in a satisfactory manner the vocabulary taught so as to be able to read and write by computer some of the characters. • are able to use some of the grammar structures taught in writing and in speaking. • are able to understand some basic spoken Chinese and able to carry on simple conversations including asking questions.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Students • are able to pronounce the sounds of spoken Chinese sufficiently well so as to be understood. • have learnt well enough the vocabulary taught so as to be able to read and write the characters. • are able to use the grammar structures taught in writing and in speaking. • are able to understand basic spoken Chinese and fluently carry on conversation.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students • are able to pronounce the sounds of spoken Chinese in an excellent manner. • have learnt very well the vocabulary taught and are able to read and write the characters. • are able to use very well the grammar structures taught in writing and in speaking. • are able to understand very well spoken Chinese from the lessons covered and fluently carry on conversation.

Teaching methods

This course is taught online. The focus is on the skills of reading, speaking and understanding spoken Chinese, and also writing the characters discussed in the course. But the main focus is on the spoken Chinese in everyday life in China. Students will act weekly dialogues imitating real-life situations. The teaching uses the communicative approach. New vocabulary and grammar are introduced through discussion. Assessment of areas needing clarification and practice is done every lesson; feedback is given regularly, and exercises created to clarify and to further practise.

Chinese 2 is a prerequisite if the student has not studied Chinese before.
